The unemployment rate has dropped to an 11-year low of just 4.8% – down by more than 900,000 since 2010 – according to figures out today.

The Office for National Statistics has confirmed that employment continues to run at a record high rate of 74.5%, with 31.8 million people in work – an increase of almost 2.8 million since 2010.

There are 461,000 more people in work compared to this time last year, and 49,000 more compared to the previous quarter’s figures.

The rise in employment continues to be driven by full-time work, which is up by 2 million since 2010. And long-term unemployment is the lowest it has been since 2008.

Average wages including bonuses grew by 2.3% over the last year, as the claimant count remained at 2.3%, close to its lowest rate since 1975.

    Employment Minister, Damian Hinds, said:

Yet again we have a strong set of figures, with employment continuing to run at a record high and unemployment falling to a 11-year low.

Growth is being fuelled by full-time professional jobs while wages are continuing to perform strongly, which underlines the resilience of the UK labour market.

The measures we have taken have put our economy in a position of strength, and we will work to ensure more people can benefit from these opportunities as we build a country that works for everyone.

    Today’s figures also show:

    • youth unemployment is down by almost 350,000 since 2010 • the number of disabled people in work has increased by 590,000 in the past 3 years • women in work at joint record high of 69.8%.

A separate set of figures out today show over 800,000 people have now made a claim to Universal Credit – of those receiving Universal Credit, 40% are now in work with an average of more than 12,500 new claims being made to the revolutionary new benefit every week.

No, unemployment has not fallen, people are being kicked off benefits to fit into a category, they are NOT in full time work. The digits have been changed and that's all.

In reality thousands and thousands of folk are being taken off the unemployment register daily as they are made to apply for zero hour contracts, and many many more decent people who want to work are being sanctioned for reasons only known to the pen pushers at the DWP.

    Let's get it into perspective.

The number of self-employed people increased by 213,000 to 4.79 million - 15.1% of all people "in work" during the same period.

Meanwhile, the number of people claiming unemployment benefits in October increased by 9,800, the biggest rise since May.

In London, the number of good quality occupational jobs has increased by 700,000 in the past 10 years compared with just under 56,000 in the north-east.

I think what the previous two contributors are trying to tell us is that the unemployment figures are only accurate when they show a rise.

Decent people, ie me, get out of bed every morning and do a decent days graft. I'm on zero hours contract ie If i dont get my arse out of bed I don't get paid self employed U see. Stop griping about stats, what if the article had been record unemployment, still go on then would we? You are never, repeat never going to have a workforce guaranteed 40 hour contracts that went YEARS ago. And pen pushers at DWP they're workers aren't they??

Rather more that people relate to what they see, sadly unemployment figures have gone up in the North West contrary to the national trend, plus like it or not most of the "new" jobs, by a long way, have gone to people from outside the UK.

    BBC news 16/11/2016.

Also worth noting that while the numbers claiming unemployment benefit continue to fall, the numbers needing in work benefits continues to rise, those in need of help from food banks etc continues to rise. To me this says that many of those in work do not earn enough (for whatever reason) to actually live on.

The vast majority by far, prefer to earn and control their own money, but it is highly debatable from a purely financial view whether it is better to be wholly on benefits or doing low paid work which does not meet basic living costs.

Attitudes to work need to change! We used to have a get out there and a can do attitude, now it's can't be bothered, I'm not doing that or it's a problem with H/S. I hear we have to import nurses, workers from Eastern Europe etc, yet we still have 1.5 million unemployed! stop funding useless degrees and put this saving into re establishing Good Technical collages. It's people that are good with their hands who produce the goods we need to export, not somebody with a degree in knitting.

The problem starts with our "caring" government, who cut the numbers of NHS staff, cut the training programmes for nurses, then surprise, surprise we have a shortage of trained nurses, exactly the same scenario with the prison service, throw in the pay freeze and guess what, we can't recruit people to do the job, we haven't bothered training people to do the job.

Agree with the concept of Tech colleges, apprenticeships, but they must have training with a purpose, not just an avenue for companies to use cheap labour.

The problem as ever, starting training when we have a skill shortage is already too late, training and skills programmes should be in place and running at all times, not just when the panic starts.

As far as attitude to work is concerned, there have always been those who think this or that job is beneath them, or who simply feel that someone else should provide while they do nothing, but among the people I know that is not common at all, in fact quite the reverse.
